Are robots about to take over?
While many of you in the robotics and autonomous systems industry think that would be cool, a lot of people are feeling uncertain about the future of their careers with the rapid advance of AI.
AI will almost certainly eliminate a variety of routine and transactional roles. Yet it also has the potential to create new opportunities for those who are prepared.
According to a recent study, nearly 30% of jobs across all industries are at risk of being automated by AI. This includes some of the obvious roles like number crunching and data analysis. But AI will also impact customer service roles and even creative work.
Rather than becoming alarmed, let’s be proactive and prepare for the future.
Here are some practical steps to start today:
- Understand the potential impact of AI: You can’t make a plan until you understand the potential impact of AI on your industry and your specific role. AI is impressive (and a bit scary), but it’s far from replacing the need for people who can build relationships, provide strategic insights, and add value in distinctly human ways.
- Identify where you add value: Take stock of your role and identify areas where you add value beyond routine tasks. Where do you excel in building relationships, providing strategic insights, or influencing outcomes? Once you’ve identified these areas, focus on building your skills, expertise, and impact in these areas.
- Develop new skills: Look for opportunities to add value. This could include building relationships, cross-training, or taking on more strategic roles Proactively working toward professional improvement will help you develop new skills and stay current on industry trends, helping you stand out among your peers.
- Build your network: Developing trusted relationships is more important than ever in a world where AI is becoming increasingly prevalent. Get to know people within your team, across your organization, and throughout the industry.
- Stay positive: Change is scary, but it can be a good thing. If you’re worried, consider partnering with a career coach. The right career coach can help you can gain insights, maintain perspective, and provide guidance and strategies for navigating a changing landscape and staying relevant in your industry.
